A short history of the pool

our past

1974 The pool was built after fundraising by the PTFA  and local community.  The Lincolnshire Education Authority funded the pool at this time.

1980 Funding was withdrawn from all school pools and Heckington pool was closed.

1986  The parents formed a swimming pool committee and £4600 was raised to re-open the pool.

1987  The pool re-opened in June, with funds guaranteed for 5 years.

The present

Heckington Community Swimming Pool is open during the summer months from the end of May to the end August, with a weather and volunteer dependant option of extended opening times during September.

Pupils of Heckington St Andrews school receive swimming lessons during school term time - it is hoped to extend this to pupils of other schools or groups during 2011.

The pool is also open for:

Public swimming at the end of each school day from 3.30pm - 5.30pm - not restricted to the pupils of Heckington School, all bathers are welcome. The pool is also open each week day for community use from 1pm - 3pm during school holidays and is used for theme parties and fundraisers on Saturdays too.

It is also available for private party hire, Ladies Aqua-Fit and for group bookings such as Baby and Toddler groups and Ladies Evenings.

As the pool is completely operated, supervised and maintained by volunteers it follows that the more volunteers we have, the more the pool can open. We would like to see it opening every day throughout the summer holidays, but need many more volunteers to facilitate this.

Free Community Lifesaver Award training, valid for 24 months, is provided to all those wishing to offer their services poolside as a 'First' (Lifesaver), but we also need additional 'Eyes on the Side'  who do not require any training, but who offer assistance and support to the duty Lifesaver by supervising poolside behaviour etc.

We also require Snack Bar assistants, ideally for each session, to serve refreshments and ices to spectators and swimmers. This enables the Eyes on the Side and duty Lifesaver to carry out their duties without distraction and brings in valuable revenue used in keeping the pool running.
